50 Nifty United States: Washington

Hello Traveling PhoBlogWripher readers! I'm Eliza, from Eliza K Prints. I've been a long time lurker on Sara's blog and jumped at the chance when she requested other bloggers write a little blurb about their state! I've traveled all over and yet I keep finding myself back in.....

I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Western Washington to be specific. The land of Subarus, fleece vests and wet dogs. The place where the rain and the coffee never stops flowing! What most people don't realize, is that Washington is geographically split down the middle by the Cascade mountains. The Eastern side is drastically different in terms of climate, culture and geography. The Western side is essentially what everyone is thinking of when they imagine Washington stereotypes. It really is a state with a split personality. Since I've lived on both sides, I'll try to represent them both equally in this little guide.

Click the links for more details on the above photos

West Side: Snowshoeing at Mt Rainier National Park, was one of my all time favorite activities I did this year. You also want to check out Deception Pass, Lake Crescent, and take a ferry boat ride around the Puget Sound. Pike Place Market is touristy, but its still one of my favorite places to go.
East Side: Catching a music festival at the Gorge is an absolute must. I'd also recommend the year-round Christmas town Leavenworth for some tasty German food and gorgeous views.

West Side:I think people automatically think of fish when they think of Washington, but what people don't know is that we have tons of different options for Vietnamese Food. If your in the mood for something else, I recommend:Its Greek to Me (Puyallup), Silver City Brewery (Silverdale) and for something sweet check out Cupcake Royale (Capitol Hill, Seattle).
East Side: Eastern Washington is home to a large Hispanic population, so you'll definitely want to check out some Mexican food. Some of my favorite restaurants on the East Side are: The Onion (Spokane) and Franks Diner (Spokane).

West Side: Drink what the locals do of course, coffee! I'm a fan of Seattle's Best or Tullys. Do yourself a favor and skip the Starbucks. You can tell them a Washingtonian said to.
East Side: Eastern Washington is known for its vineyards and hops fields. Which gives a ton of choices for wine and microbrews! Set up a tour and get some free samples:)

Warnings and Disclaimers:
I've had a lot of Southern friends confess they felt that Washingtonians are sometimes rude. Maybe its the weather, or maybe its just "the North".
If on the West side, be prepared to get wet. All day. Every day.
The East side is brutally hot in the summer. Pack accordingly:)

Thanks for letting me share my state Sara!

  4. I love this one! It definitely is a two-faced state. On our raod trip we stayed one night in the east side of the state and toured through there and it was still beautiful! Granted, we were along the Columbia River most of the drive! Ahh, now I want to go back to WA! Hopefully the future will bring me there for school!
