The Bouillon Cube

The other night in my prenatal aqua aerobics class the instructor mentioned pranks.
I am not a very good prankster. I would like to be, but I'm not.
There is one prank though, that I'm really proud of. And that prank is fondly referred to as The Bouillon Cube
My little brother was the worst kid in the world. I'm serious. It was pretty bad. He made annoying jokes, said annoying things, did annoying things, wore annoying clothes, had annoying facial expressions, and annoyingly pointed out my flaws at all the wrong times.
I was never anything but awesome towards him, so I attribute this to an extreme and irrational form of jealousy.
One day, when he was ten or so, I'd had enough.
I snuck into the kitchen, pulled a chicken bouillon cube out of the cabinet, and ran it under the sink for a second. It was wet and shiny, just like I wanted.
I then skipped into Brother Bear's bedroom and sang, "I got the la-aaast caramel, I got the la-aaaast caramel!"
Exactly what I knew would happen, happened.
He snatched it out of my hand and smirked. "You mean I got the last caramel?"
A wide smile spread across my face just at the moment he popped it into his mouth.
His smirk quickly faded into a deadpan, and then a look of sheer horror.
Long, slimy strings of saliva hung from his mouth as he spit the offender into his hand.
"How's that bouillon cube?" I asked.
"I hate you," he muttered while attempting to wipe off his tongue with his hand. "What's wrong with you?"
He was mad about that for a good year, but now the story lives on in the history of our family.
In fact, when I texted him to ask if I could share this story here he replied "Hell yes, I actually told that story yesterday."

How cute was he?! He and Ryan actually looked a little bit alike as wee ones so if we have a little man it will be impossible for him to be anything but adorable.
The good news, though, is that now we are friends and I really like him.

Also, yesterday I finished reading Jenny McCarthy's pregnancy book, Belly Laughs.
I think I would describe it as "pretty okay." It wasn't amazing by any means, but it added humor to some of the body changes I'm a little nervous about. It was honest and informative though, and I liked that, so I do think I'll read Baby Laughs too.
Oh, and the peanut butter cookie Larabar? Delicious.
I like a lot of different Larabars but this one is my favorite right now. Pregnant women are supposed to get 71 grams of protein per day (Does anyone else find that to be outrageous and obscene?) and I have a heck of a time getting enough in each day because I hate eggs and meat right now. I have to force myself to eat it, and then I have some Bolthouse Farms chai protein drink or a smoothie with protein powder mixed in, plus an ounce of cheese for a snack at some point, a 7g PBCookie Larabar for dessert, and that usually does it.

Enjoy your Saturday y'all!

  1. i often made the mistake of not getting enough protein in the morning. and then i would pass out at work. and i was a server. :-/ this happened a handful of times, and let me tell you, it's not a pretty sight when someone is taking your order and they suddenly begin to sweat and turn ghost white, and then fall to the floor. i was later told that the sweet little 17 year old guy who i worked with said, 'oh, she's just a little bit pregnant.' hah. :) but 71 grams does sound a bit much.

i loved the bouillon cube joke. :)

    3. Sara, I so wish I knew about that as a kid! My brother was the same way, though I was also mean to him!

I have that Larabar at home but haven't tried it yet! I'll have to eat it soon.

    1. He he, thank you!
But it did not. Actually, it spurred a far more terrible prank on me, but I'll tell about that one some other time. ;]
