I have always loved Chai tea.
When I was 12 one of high school youth group leaders at my church invited me to a sleepover with all the high school girls. It was mildly uncomfortable for me, but absolutely worth it when she set out little tea cups with something called Chai in them.
It was delicious.
My mom and I went to a Starbucks a month or two later and right there on the menu was Chai! I of course ordered it... and was miserably disappointed. It didn't have any milk in it, was simply the tea bag steeped in hot water.
When we found Chai tea bags a week or two later, we bought them and poured our own milk into them.
I know a lot of people who love Chai but don't make it at home because they don't have an espresso machine to steam milk with!
Now that's just crazy.
This cheap-o would NEVER buy an espresso machine but I make chai all the time!
Getting a gorgeous froth is actually quite simple.
Heat up your water and steep your tea. While it's steeping, heat up a milk of your choice, just before boiling. Keep in mind that whatever amount you heat up is going to be doubled. I chose 1/4 cup.
Once your milk is heated, dump it into a jar and shake it up! 30 seconds to a minute makes a nearly perfect froth. Dairy-free "milk" will take longer to froth than milk.
Pour your frothy milk on top of your chai, enjoy!

Ooohh I love Chai as well!! I usually steep my tea and pour in cup, add a tablespoon of honey and then about half a cup of milk. So comforting! Now I want some!!! :) makes delicious iced chai too!!!! ~ Counting Down Sara
ReplyDeleteI have surprisingly never made iced Chai. I love it at the coffee shops, but I've never made it myself! I'll have to make that or blended chais next summer!

Chai is my FAVORITE drink ever, but I've never done it like this! That's so easy and such a good idea, I'll have to try it soon!
ReplyDeleteIt's delicious! =]
